Sonic Boom - California Lullaby (Taken from What Came Before After)
Out of the ashes of Spacemen 3 came Spiritualized (Jason Pierce) and Spectrum (Pete Kember). Kember also records and releases in parallel under the name of E.A.R and has played and collaborated with Stereolab and Yo La Tengo and is currently working on MGMT’s forthcoming album.
This guy loves exploring ambient, droning and tonal sounds using vintage synthesizers. Between his two projects, Spectrum is more pop-leaning with typical song structures (this song is an example), while E.A.R is where he gets very experimental using sounds.

Pavement - The Killing Moon (Orig. by Echo and the Bunnymen)
Two bands I really like… never thought Pavement would reform but they did, and the Bunnymen just released a new album. Could it get any better!
Happy Cover Friday!

Lake - Madagascar (Taken from Let’s Build A Roof)
A groovy, soulful 70s vibe… first listen and I swear I thought Barry White was going to sing leads, which would have seemed appropriate.

The Big Pink - At War with the Sun (A Brief History of Love)
You may have already heard the earworm single, “Dominos”. Well, this is one of those band’s where judging a book by its covers is a bad bet. The album is worth a listen that once it gets a hold of your ears, you are hooked. Electro-indie-rock goodness! If you like The XX, you might like the Big Pink.

But, why give up billions, how does that make sense? In 2015, labels will have either been forced into obsolescence, or totally reinvented around different formats and consumption habits. They will either be shells for the catalog that remains licensable, bought and traded, or a meaningful contributor - and profitable beneficiary - of the music experience. But they will not be minting billions on CDs, opening the uncomfortable question of when a clean break needs to be made

Cymbals Eat Guitars - Indiana (Taken Why There Are Mountains)
A little bit of My Bloody Valentine/Spirtualized (droning feedback), Explosions in the Sky (ambient instrumental) and out of nowhere in the middle of a song comes pure indie pop. They seem to play a song within a song within a song. Very different but very good.

Bad Lieutenant - Shine Like The Sun (Taken from Never Cry Another Tear)
Here is one album I’ve really been looking forward to which finally came out last week. Bernard Sumner (New Order) finally releasing his post-New Order album with his new band. (You can grab it from eMusic!) First listen and I’m impressed but I’ve been a huge Joy Division/New Order fan for so long that it’s probably not that hard to impress me. I guess you can call me the prototypical “SuperFan”.
And next I’m really looking forward to hearing what Peter Hook is doing with his new band Free Bass.

Kevin Davis - 99 Red Balloons (orig. Nena)
I liked the original but being fairly young at the time during the Cold War, the apocalyptic theme freaked me. Seeing those mushroom clouds in the video certainly didn’t help!

Also manage the popular and definitive Artists on Twitter List and co-organize OpenMusicMedia Toronto with Josh Newman, an offshoot of the popular OpenMusicMedia London meetup started in the UK that brings people together to discuss the intersection of music, media and digital culture.
