My friends over at KUPE Arts Society here in Toronto are organizing a FlashJam tomorrow (Saturday, July 17th) starting at 1pm. Here are all the details, so if you happen to be in Toronto (or surrounding area) and love music, come on down and check it out!
The FlashJam is akin to a flashmob - a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and pointless act for a brief time, then disperse. The
FlashJam is a group of musicians getting together to jam in a public place. The point for this particular gathering is awareness and fund raising for, at first, KUPE Arts Society and then other neighbourhood arts related non-profit organizations.
Organizers will be on-site to take donations, promote the organization and encourage community involvement at the event. The FlashJam is held to support the selected cause. The first FlashJam event went to benefit Toronto based non-profit group KUPE Arts Society.
KUPE {Kids Understand Practically Everything} Arts Society was founded in 2009 to develop and administer free arts programs for kids in under served communities in Toronto .
Outside The Box Youth Music Program {OTB} is the first initiative started by
the group. OTB is a FREE music education program provided to children
between the ages of 7 to 13 in Toronto . OTB was created as a direct response to the decreased availability of music programming in the Toronto
public school system. The OTB program is designed to inspire youth and provide
opportunity to kids who would normally have no access to musical instruments or
lessons due to social and or economic barriers.
Sign-up at Flashjams to receive notifications of the next FlashJam. The location of the FlashJam is kept a secret until 24 hours before actual event when a notification goes out to the list and other users.
So far, approximately $500 for KUPE on the street, another $540 through active social media during the Jam.
